With climate change and global warming taking hold of the planet, lots of countries are working together to install various methods to control the levels of pollution and wastage of energy. New York too is doing its part with strategic efforts led by various educational organizations, the New York government and the US Department of Energy. This initiative is set to issue work permits for the proper installation of solar panels in all five boroughs. Dominick Ciccarelli, eminent architect and a licensed contractor with Department of Buildings, advises property owners to follow this guide to understand this process.
The city of New York needs the property owners to do both electrical work and proper construction work in order to install solar panels. In addition, a plumbing work permit is required for the PVC installation. If the installation of the solar panels on the property require more work, more permits will be required.

Ascertaining if the property requires asbestos investigation

Any building in New York has a proper code on the basis of the area it is situated in. One of the most common codes is for the presence of asbestos. Buildings, especially if their plans were created before April 1, 1987, require mandatory and regular asbestos inspections. To receive a construction permit for a property with asbestos, you would submit a form approved by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to the Department of Building.

Completion of the asbestos survey report

If your property requires an asbestos inspection, the investigator will submit a survey report on the online Asbestos Reporting and Tracking System (ARTS) of DEP and pay the required fee. After the submission of the report, you will have to enrol for Development Hub on DOB’s website. The Development Hub is the filing system for electrical and construction permits. Select Minor Construction for installation of solar panels.

Online Permit application

After enrolling on the Development Hub, select Begin New Application and answer the questions. Once you have done that, the website will automatically generate the PW1 form. Follow the guidelines and complete the permit application and all other related fields.

If you do not have the time to complete the process yourself or have a problem understanding the process, you can contact a licensed contractor or an experienced architect to help you complete this step.
